IPL Hair and Skin Rejuvenation treatments

What is IPL?

Intense pulsed light, commonly abbreviated as IPL, is a technology used by beauty clinics and medical practitioners to perform various skin treatments including hair removal and photo rejuvenation. The technology utilizes a broad spectrum light source, with a general spectral range of 515 to 1200 nm. Various cut off filters are commonly used to filter out lower frequencies and narrow this spectrum to target specific structures and chromospheres. Because of the broad spectrum of the IPL light source they are unique, as opposed to lasers, in the ability to filter the light spectrum to target various chromospheres in the skin.

Intense pulsed light describes the use of intense pulses of non-coherent light distributed over a range of wavelengths from 500 nm to 1200 nm, for removal of hair and other purposes. A related but distinct technique is laser hair removal; the primary difference is that laser treatment uses laser-generated coherent and monochromatic light.

Regulations governing IPL and laser hair removal vary by jurisdiction.
The two techniques are often confused. There are many names used for intense pulsed light treatments. IPL and equivalent treatments are referred to as I2PL, UPL, VPL, SPL, SPFT, SPTF, SIPL, PTF, CPL, AFT, E-Light, ELOS, M-Light, and other names.

The name “Intense Pulse Light” is not known to be a registered trademark.

A distinction is sometimes made between beauty-grade and medical-grade machines. This distinction is mainly to get around regulations. Under the CE system no such distinction exists, it is all seen as medical devices.
Treatment options:

IPL, short for intense pulsed light, is a popular treatment that is best-known for its ability to treat vascular conditions like broken capillaries (“spider veins”) and the brown spots or “age spots” caused by sun damage. IPL also stimulates the production of collagen, which plumps up the skin and gives you a fresher look, and refines or tightens large pores. New IPL machines can also be effective at hair removal.

The ideal candidate for IPL is someone with light skin who has sun damage, broken capillaries, and some laxity or lack of firmness, and wants to treat all three conditions at the same time. IPL is sometimes referred to as a photo facial. IPL is not the same as a laser treatment.

IPL treatments are usually less expensive than laser treatments, so you might want to try that first and see what kind of results you get.

Both lasers and IPL use intense blasts of light and heat, and both can be uncomfortable to painful, depending on the treatment, your skin type and condition, and your own pain tolerance. The operator will probably put a cooling gel on your skin, and cooling devices are often built into the machine. Operator skill can also minimize pain, but you should expect discomfort at the very least. The traditional explanation of IPL is that it is “a rubber band snapping,” but there is heat involved and it can be more uncomfortable than that metaphor indicates. Talk to the person giving you the treatment beforehand to get a realistic idea of how it will feel and what some of the side effects might be.

Things to be aware of:

  • IPL CANNOT get rid of tattoos and should be kept away from any tattoos you have and want to keep.
  • People with Asian skin or darker skin should be extra careful as IPL can sometimes causes hyper-pigmentation.
  • IPL can burn the skin, which can cause permanent scarring. Share all medical History with clinic prior to treatment.
  • Always complete an intake form and discuss all your concerns before treatment.
  • Make sure that your therapist understands which area/areas are applicable to treatment.
  • Wear goggles during treatment to protect your eyes.
  • No children allowed in treatment area.
  • Make sure that you follow aftercare instructions.
  • Results will depend on your hair and skin conditions and frequency of follow up sessions.
